The Carup Acoustic Bass Guitar fills the specific role that neither an electric bass nor an upright acoustic bass fully covers — providing the warmth, acoustic resonance, and visual character of an acoustic instrument in a body format comfortable for electric bass players, with the modern playing experience of a fretted instrument rather than the technique demands of upright playing. This instrument exists to serve acoustic ensemble settings — the singer-songwriter performance with an acoustic guitarist, the bluegrass or folk group, the acoustic rehearsal where an electric bass through a practice amplifier would be tonally inconsistent with the character of the musical setting. Carup builds the top of this instrument from solid Sitka spruce — the same top material specified for its premium full-size acoustic guitars — because the acoustic bass’s primary job is to produce a genuinely musical, resonant, acoustic tone, and that job cannot be done convincingly with a laminate top that absorbs rather than transmits vibrational energy. The mahogany back and sides provide the warmth and sustain in the low-midrange frequencies that bass playing requires, preventing the natural brightness of the spruce top from producing a thin or nasal character in the bass register. Carup’s X-bracing pattern for the acoustic bass is adapted specifically for the significantly higher string tension of bass strings compared to standard guitar strings — the braces are heavier in section and differently tapered to handle the structural demands of the bass register while maintaining vibrational freedom. The onboard Carup preamp provides the amplification option needed for performing contexts where the natural acoustic projection of the instrument cannot fill the space, with bass, treble, and volume controls for stage tone shaping. A 4-band chromatic tuner is integrated into the preamp for silent on-stage tuning.
